Many drivers assume that removing the combustion engine removes the need for professional maintenance altogether. In practice, the opposite is true in one important respect: EV-specific systems such as thermal management, high-voltage safety circuits and battery health monitoring require specialist equipment and knowledge that not every garage possesses.
What's Different About Servicing an Electric Car
The biggest difference between servicing an EV and a combustion-engine car is the absence of certain components. Electric vehicles have no engine oil to change, no spark plugs to replace, no timing belt to inspect and no exhaust system to maintain. Coolant and Thermal Management Systems
Electric vehicles use liquid cooling systems to manage battery and motor temperature. The coolant in these systems degrades over time and needs to be checked and replaced at manufacturer-specified intervals — typically every three to five years depending on the vehicle. Neglecting the thermal management system can accelerate battery degradation and reduce the vehicle's effective range over time.
This is an EV-specific maintenance item that has no direct equivalent in a petrol service, and it's one of the reasons why EVs shouldn't simply be assumed to be maintenance-free based on the absence of oil changes.

Many modern EVs rely heavily on software for everything from battery management to regenerative braking calibration. How Often Should an Electric Car Be Serviced?
Most EV manufacturers recommend an annual service or one based on mileage — typically every 12,000 to 18,000 miles, depending on the model. Consult your owner's handbook for the specific interval for your vehicle, as this varies significantly between manufacturers and model variants.
Even if your mileage is low, an annual check is worth booking to keep the brake fluid, coolant and safety systems in order. Time-based deterioration of fluids and seals occurs independently of mileage, making calendar-based servicing necessary for all drivers regardless of usage.
Does Servicing an EV Affect the Warranty?
Most EV manufacturer warranties — including battery warranties, which can extend to eight years or 100,000 miles on many models — require that the vehicle is serviced at the recommended intervals by a qualified garage.
